Ayurvedic-Inspired Pancakes

With Shrove Tuesday just around the corner, avoid feeling bloated and uncomfortable by eating the right type of pancakes for your dosha type. Each dosha has it’s differences so tailor make your pancake slightly to fit in with your dosha. For the Vata type, opt for thicker and denser pancakes to pacify the air element and Pitta’s are recommended pancakes that are of medium thickness. As the texture of pancakes can be quite Kapha enhancing, those who are dominant Kapha are recommended half the amount or to make a thinner batter and spread it more thinly in the style of a French crepe. By adding various healthy toppings such as nuts and honey alongside fruit, these pancakes are versatile and can be made any day of the week.

Ingredients:

  • 360g Flour (for Vata’s and Pitta’s, use spelt or wholewheat flower. Kapha’s should use a combination of buckwheat and rice flour)
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 300ml oat milk (or any other type of dairy-free milk)
  • 300ml sparkling water (add less/more to make a thick batter)
  • 4 tbsp olive oil

Method:

  • Mix your flour of choice with the baking powder and pinch of salt. Start to add enough oat milk and sparkling water to the make a thick batter. For Kapha’s use all of the milk to create a thinner batter but for Vata’s and Pitta’s, keep as is. Combine together with a whisk to create fluffy pancakes.
  • Heat some oil in a non-stick frying pan.
  • Pour a small ladleful of batter into the pan to make the style of pancake associated to each dosha. For Vata’s and Pitta’s opt for the American style and Kapha’s, the French crepe.
  • Cook until the edges can be lifted and then flip to cook on both sides.
  • Serve with the recommended toppings alongside some fruit!

Toppings:

Vata: Maple syrup or agave, toasted cashews or blanches almonds

Pitta: Maple syrup or agave, toasted sunflower or pumpkin seeds

Kapha: raw honey with toasted sunflower or pumpkin seeds
